Metformin Hydrochloride Prolonged Release and Glimepiride Tablets are a combination medication used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in adults whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled by diet, exercise, or a single medication alone.

Composition

These tablets typically contain two active ingredients:

1. Metformin Hydrochloride (Prolonged Release)

   • Class: Biguanide

   • Function: Decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity.

2. Glimepiride

   • Class: Sulfonylurea

   • Function: Stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin.

Uses

• Control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

• Helps reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as nerve damage, kidney issues, and vision problems.

• May also be used as part of a broader diabetes management plan, including diet and exercise.

Important Warnings

• Hypoglycemia Risk: Glimepiride can cause low blood sugar, especially if meals are skipped or delayed.

• Lactic Acidosis: A rare but serious side effect of Metformin. Symptoms include muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, and feeling cold.

• Kidney Function: Metformin is excreted by the kidneys; impaired function may increase risk of lactic acidosis.

Dosage and Administration

• Taken once daily with meals, usually breakfast, to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

• Dosage is individualized based on patients current blood sugar levels and tolerance.

• Must be taken regularly for best results.

Drug Interactions

• Alcohol: Increases risk of lactic acidosis.

• Beta-blockers: May mask symptoms of hypoglycemia.

• Other diabetes meds: Risk of additive hypoglycemic effects.

Monitoring

• Blood glucose levels

• HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin)

• Kidney function tests (eGFR/creatinine)

• Liver function (less common, but sometimes recommended)
