Ursodeoxycholic acid is mainly used for:

1. Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (non-calcified, small stones in a functioning gallbladder)

2. Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)  a chronic liver disease

3. Chronic cholestatic liver diseases (to improve bile flow)

4. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)  sometimes prescribed off-label

5. Drug-induced liver injury  as supportive therapy

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a hydrophilic bile acid that:

• Reduces cholesterol absorption and secretion into bile

• Protects liver cells from bile acidinduced injury

• Improves bile flow and reduces liver enzyme levels

• 815 mg/kg/day, taken in 13 divided doses

• Example: For an adult (~60 kg), typical dose = 300 mg twice daily (as prescribed by a doctor)
